Summary note
The action takes place in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. The main character is a retiring bibliophile, obsessed with a noble passion for ancient manuscripts. Once he helped a poor woman who lived next door by sending her a cup of broth and a log for the fireplace. He soon forgot about his act of kindness. Eight years later, he receives as a gift an old manuscript that he had long dreamed of, and is surprised to learn that the donor is the woman whom he had helped in difficult times.
