Summary note
Descended from Olympus, Jupiter is struck by the beauty of Alcmene, wife of the Theban commander Amphitryon. Jupiter appears to Alcmene in the form of her husband, but when the real Amphitryon returns from war, absurd situations between the household and the gods ensue.
