    • 本書以1930年代為中心, 考察臺灣社會對教育的想望. 過去的研究, 多集中在近代學校體系初創的日治初期, 臺灣知識分子可以自己發聲的1920年代, 以及戰爭時期的皇民化教育. 相對來說, 我們對於1930年代的教育, 社會狀況認識有限.然而, 1930年代正是臺灣社會教育需求爆發的時期, 臺灣學齡兒童就學率首度超過50%,各級學校大幅擴張, 升學也不再是少數菁英的特權. 這些成長, 除了來自殖民政府的統治意圖之外, 更多的是臺灣民眾積極爭取的結果.
