    Summary note
A biography of Mandel (born Louis Rothschild in 1885), a French Jewish politician and journalist. Mandel was an editor of the journal "L'Aurore" and a collaborator of Georges Clemenceau. Mentions that throughout his life he was confronted by antisemitism. Pp. 245-323 deal with the World War II period and with Mandel's fate during the Vichy regime. When the war began, Mandel was the French Minister of Internal Affairs. Describes his position in favor of resistance, though he did not leave France with Charles de Gaulle. On 17 June 1940 Mandel was arrested by Pétain as a political opponent and as a Jew. He was released, but was arrested several times before he was sent to concentration camps in Germany. In July 1944 Mandel was brought back to France and killed by the Militia in reprisal for the assassination of Phillipe Henriot (the Vichy Minister of Information) by the resistance. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
