Summary note
In the year when Rio de Janeiro celebrates its 450 years, an unprecedented exhibition offers the opportunity to enjoy the view of one of the greatest French traveler painters about and his view of the "cidade maravilhosa". One hundred and twenty original works by Jean-Baptiste Debret (b. France 1768-1848). The watercolors are part of the Castro Maya Collection, the largest collection of Debret works in Brazil. The painter lived in Rio de Janeiro between 1816 and 1831 and during his stay he was witness of the great transformations in the Brazilian society as a result of the coming of the Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808. In Rio, Debret witnessed defining moments and governmental acts that changed the political, social and cultural future of the country and also the daily life of the city.
