    Summary note
In this book for scholars, policy makers, and advanced students, social democracy is shown to be a better principle of social organization to replace markets. The contributors draw on Karl Polyani’s theory of countermovement and transformation, as well as classic sociology frameworks. The book begins with an overview of the open-market society and its opponents and describes types of anti-neoliberalism, such as moralism, Marxism, and 21st-century socialism. It then examines reforms within economic and governance restraints, such as reform of central banks and monetary policy, austerity versus social policy, and neoliberalism and nationalist populism. The last section gives recommendations for restoring balance between the market and civil society and offers discussion of neoliberalism and social democracy. --Publisher
