"Il est question ici de deux éléments fondamentaux dans la musique de jazz : le blues qui lui a fourni une grande part de sa thématique ; le swing qui en distingue la singularité rythmique. Partant de quatre big bands reconnus comme les plus exemplaires (ceux de Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Count Basie), Jacques Réda analyse les rapports que ces orchestres entretiennent avec le Temps - le bond du rythme étant peut-être un point commun aux forces naturelles, à la poésie, et au principe incarné par ce que Duke Ellington appelait "la grande musique noire américaine" à son zénith.
