Summary note
In this book, veteran instructors take the reader inside their classrooms as they explain successful practices for teaching the History of the English Language, a notoriously challenging course due to its wide chronological, geographic, and disciplinary scope. A standard university offering for over 150 years, the History of the English language originally focused on philological issues in canonical British literary works. But in the twenty-first century, instructors must account for written and spoken Englishes as well as the language's transformative relationship with the internet and new media. In each chapter, a preeminent scholar discusses a particular pedagogical issue, offering activities, assignments, and discussion questions ready for instructors' immediate use. For that, the volume will be an indispensable resource for both new and experienced History of the English Literature instructors. Moreover, the book's diverse pedagogical approaches reflect how this unique course generates multidisciplinary conversations as well as innovative scholarship. -- from back cover.
