Summary note
This collection contains a compilation of material relating to student activism and the student publication the Progressive Review. The collection highlights the student body's campus and international awareness and documents the left-of-center perspective held by the Progressive Review and numerous students.
This collection contains flyers, various committee reports and minutes, proposals, clippings, correspondence, judicial proceedings, personal notes, a video, and ephemera. The materials in Series 1, Organizations and Individuals, and Series 2, General, are largely independent from the magazine itself. These records are a compilation from various organizations and people, most unaffiliated with the publication or operating in a different capacity. Series 3, Correspondence File of John G. Oakes, however, documents the founding and early years of the Progressive Review magazine. Organizations and individuals represented in this collection include those that opposed the Gulf War of 1991, those that rallied for Sexual Harassment/Assault/Advising Resources and Education (SHARE), and the Undergraduate Student Government. In some cases, activist causes rather than groups are included where it makes sense to do so; these include on-campus ROTC, on-campus recruitment by organizations with discriminatory hiring practices, and the University's alcohol policy.
