    Summary note
Abstract: An historical text on housing concepts and needs discusses current concepts and practical information for homeowners, architects, home and city planners and builders, activists, and public officials for revitalizing the importance of home ownership. The material is arranged under 3 principal sections: the evolution of American housing (from "the American dream" to awakening from the dream); new social trends and changes in public desires (e.g., feminism, employment of women, gourmet cooking, applicances, etc.) influencing concepts in home design and utilization; and current trends in restructuring domestic space, domesticating urban space, and architechural design trends. The material provides a plan for recreating living space that will satisfy the needs and desires of future families. Aspects of housing policy are discussed in relation to the overall pattern of society at different points of time. The different roles played by women (mothers, homemakers, wage earners, etc.) are explored thoroughly. (wz).
