    Notes
    • "Karaghiozis" is a bumbling hunchback peasant who functions are a nationalistic figure who fights the Turks (often embodied by Hacivat, the well-educated Ottoman fuctionary) for Greek independence. Though comedic -- a cross between Charlie Chaplin and Don Quixote, the figure is very xenophobic, expressing the historical greek hatred towards the occupying Turks. In the 19th century it provided Greek adult entertainment; in the 20th century it was transformed to shadow puppet plays for children.
    • Poster for a production of one of these puppet plays given on Kea 16 June 2001 laid in.
    Binding note
