公元2, 3世纪, 亚洲大陆东端汉帝国的城市, 虽然缺乏统一的城市布局, 但高耸的城墙和城市中的"坊"构成了鲜明的城郭国家. 然而, 自4世纪开始, 来自欧亚内陆游牧民族的持续拥入, 打断了中华帝国城市发展的进程, 很多城市被彻底放弃或者经历了重建. 最为关键的是, 这些来自欧亚内陆的游牧民族为中华帝国城市注入了新的元素, 如大量新城市的建造, 城市的棋盘格的规划布局以及城市中子城的兴建等等, 使得中华帝国的城市呈现出不同于以往的新的形态, 并且一直影响到了此后古代城市的发展.
