Summary note
Strands I is the first in a series of "books" that may be composed throughout my career. Each "book" is a collection of concertinos for various solo instruments with wind ensemble. Within each collection, the concertinos contain shared content, although each could be performed independently or in any order. Interludes written for the soloists, called strands, connect the concertinos in whichever order they are performed. The concertinos have particular concepts, suggested by their titles, which are gradually revealed as the pieces progress. The strands are composed as crab canons, resulting in the same transitional effect if the order of movements were reversed, in which case the horizontal strand would be read from left to right, upside down. Also, the instrumentation is variable: The flute strand consists of a "glossing" clarinet part, which can be omitted. The same can be said of the clarinet-dominated strands. The aleatoric aspects of this work have practical roots: I want the "books" to be like organic bodies of repertoire that can be customized according to a director's needs, personnel, taste, et cetera As new books are composed, so will new strands that connect movements between books. I hope that Strands I, and its subsequent books, offers a diverse selection of pieces that pose a challenge to either talented student soloists or visiting performers, and serve as a gateway to new-music concepts that are technically accessible.
