Summary note
A pupil of David, painter favorite of the Empress Josephine, who had seven of his paintings, painter and the Comte d'Artois, the future Charles X, the Lyonnais Fleury Richard, celebrated at the Salon of 1802 Valentine of Milan, invented painting historical genre, but it gave him the colors of his own sensibility. Friend of Germaine de Staël and Juliette Recamier, he enrolled in the artistic and intellectual climate of the early Romantics. Beyond the assumed legacy of David and the masters of the Dutch Golden Age, this magician of light is a painter of sentiment increased to the expression of melancholy fates broken mirror of his own melancholy.
