Notes
Design, hand-composition of ATF Garamond 459 and 460 foundry types, letterpress printing on a Vandercook Universal I press, and handscroll binding in Japanese bookcloth and decorative paper were done by David Sellers. The frontispiece Enso and tailpiece skull image, by unidentified Edo period Zen Bhuddist monks, were printed from type-high magnesium photoengravings made from the original sumi-e hanging scroll paintings.
Each handscroll is fitted in a paulownia wooden box custom-made to the binder's specifications by Mihagi-Kougei Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan. Typesetting began in late 1995 and final edits were done in March 1996. After an eighteen years' pause, printing was done December 2013 to February 2014.
Originally appeared in Mountains and Rivers Without End (1996).
ExRML copy, no. 11, is signed by author and printer.
