本书以士族群体为研究视角, 探讨公元3至9世纪太原士族群体的形成, 发展, 壮大, 崩溃, 复兴直至彻底消亡的历史过程, 揭示了中国中古时期太原士族群体的变迁历程和单体家族的兴衰及其影响因素. 全书共分八章, 分别介绍东汉太原大姓势力的形成, 魏晋之际的党派分野与太原士族群的升降等内容.
