    The Ideological Transformation of 20th century Chinese Literature examines the origin and vicissitudes of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. The development of Chinese literature in the 20th century was inevitably bound up with the turbulent political and social context of the time. Xie Mian traces the influence of Western thoughts and Chinese cultural character on China's New Literature revolutionary literature and Modernist School. He further argues that conservative and progressive forces existed in different forms in different stages throughout the history of Chinese literature after New Literature displaced ancient literature. From this extraordinary history in Chinese literature, Xie observes that the tension between rebellion and conformation is a strong shaping force for the formation of Chinese literature and literary criticism in the modern era. This volume is a comprehensive essay collection of Xie's research and reflection on the development of 20th century. Chinese literature that spanned decades.
