Summary note
The agency conducted the RFS as part of the decennial census program to collect data about the financing of non-farm, privately-owned residential properties in the United States. The agency prepared public use microdata sample files from the RFS for researchers. This series contains housing census data on the characteristics of the financing of homeowner and rental properties, including characteristics of the mortgages, properties, and property owners. There are two data file per year, a homeowner property file and a rental and vacant property file. Each file has two record types: property records with information provided by the property owner and mortgage records with information provided by the mortgage lender. Data items include the location of the property by region, state, and whether it is inside or outside a metropolitan area; mortgage origination and reasons for obtaining additional mortgages; year property acquired; property acquisition characteristics; property owner demographics; real estate taxes; and mortgage financing and home equity loan details.
