Summary note

This study looks at the presentation of Constantine's image in antiquity. His success depended in part on his public image: his quality and virtue changed and adapted depending on the audience to which his image was presented. But who decided how to represent an emperor in the late antique period? Who were the choice architects of the Constantinian world? And how did they handle the revolutionary denial of Roman tradition that occurred after Constantine's conversion? For the answers to these questions, this book looks to the Panegyrici Latini.
