Summary note

Memoirs of a Jew born in 1931 in Stettin, Germany (now Szczecin, Poland) to a Jewish father and non-Jewish mother; pp. 41-57 discuss the Nazi period. Weil's father, who had passed a teachers' exam, was deleted from a list of applicants for jobs in 1933. In 1936, during a vacation in Switzerland, the family received a letter ordering them to report to the Gestapo because of illegal socialist activity, and they decided not to return to Germany.
