    Summary note
    • "Participation is a widely used and diffuse concept. Patrick van Beveren shows in this study that there is a multitude of definitions, descriptions and forms, but that hardly any theoretical concepts have been developed at the same time in recent decades. The ladder of Arnstein (1969) is still leading in many discussions and publications, while the general feeling is that this classical approach to power is no longer sufficient in today's time. The star and triangle of May (2006) are presented as alternatives in this research, knowing that this conceptual model has not yet been broadly embraced in the world of policy and science. The empirical part of this research examines the input and influence of residents in relation to urban renewal in the Amsterdam Bijlmermeer. Never before has this aspect of the large-scale and complex renewal process in the Bijlmermeer, which is currently in a final phase, been examined on the basis of archive, literature and survey research. Van Beveren reveals through 'mixed methods' how residents' input and influence can be interpreted in this specific research context. He also arrives at sobering conclusions about resident participation in formal policy development at the national and urban level: conclusions that are incompatible with the seemingly increasing importance attributed to participation in the many debates and investigations on this theme"--Translated note from page 4 of cover.
